Rodger is the coach for the Knights, a grass roots soccer team in Lehae. According to André Symes, Group Brand Manager at Genasys (the proud sponsor of the Knights), the work that coach Roger does with the 80-odd players is remarkable, not only in terms of coaching them, but moulding them into fine young men.
“Over the past few years we have seen the team grow tremendously, not only in numbers, but in dedication, hard work, commitment, and an utmost love for the game of soccer,” says AndrĂ©, “We have some future stars in the making in the team, with one of the goal shooters having been asked to try out for the Kaizer Chiefs.”
Rodger trains all four teams four times a week, as well as managing them on the weekends when they play their matches at the Nike Soccer Academy in Soweto.
“Amazingly, he does this all without a steady job, and relies heavily on Genasys to sponsor and help where we can,” says AndrĂ©. “We are now engaging with him to help set up a small business of his own that he will use to fund his love of teaching the beautiful game of football to these bright young stars. A big hurdle was that he does not have his own transport. With my personal interest in cycling, I was exposed to the Qhubeka initiative through Team MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung, and I thought it would be fantastic to support the Qhubeka initiative and coach Rodger by getting him a bike. I hope that this is the first of many Qhubeka Buffalo Bicycles that we will be handing over in the future.”
