The South African Gary Player Invitational (GPI), presented by Coca-Cola, features Major golf champions, celebrities and top-flight businessmen rubbing shoulders on the fairways. Over the past few years, the GPI has chosen Wildlands Conservation Trust, one of Qhubeka’s implementation partners, as a beneficiary. In 2013, the GPI funded 783 new bicycles. Later this week, from 20 to 23 November, the participants of the 2014 GPI will compete to raise funds for Wings and Wishes and the Wildlands Conservation Trust in partnership with Qhubeka, this year’s charity beneficiaries of the tournament.
The Gary Player Invitational is unique in the world of golf in that it partners two top businessmen, a top celebrity, a professional golfer in a team format where all can contribute to the final result. The two best net scores (of any of the four players) on each hole will count. The team recording the best score over 36 holes will be declared the winner.
This year’s event, which will take place at the Lost City Golf Course and The Palace Hotel at Sun City, also brings together a remarkable group of people to play for charity. This year’s line-up includes former Proteas cricket legends Mark Boucher, Jacques Kallis and Herschelle Gibbs, along with former Bafana Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena and former Manchester United soccer icon Andy Cole. Joining them are Spanish model and actress Inés Sastre and actress and athlete Vanessa Haywood (of District Nine fame).
The professional golfers will be taking part, including Sunshine Tour professional Jake Roos, triple Major Champion Padraig Harrington; former Masters champion and European Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam; European Tour professionals Robert Rock, Thomas Levet, Lee Slattery and Ignacio Garrido; and Ladies European Tour campaigners Carly Booth and Amy Boulden, not forgetting 18-time Major winner and Grand Slam champion Gary Player.
Celebrating 15 years of giving back this year, the GPI series has raised over R600 million for charity in order to support the various causes supported by The Player Foundation.
