Samsung South Africa, a proud sponsor of Team MTN Qhubeka, is pleased to announce that it has raised over R1 million to assist the Qhubeka Bikes for Life Programme – further reinforcing its commitment to creating sustainable projects for the youth in Africa.
In addition to this monetary investment, 120 bicycles were handed over by Qhubeka at an event in Boksburg yesterday, 09 May 2013. In line with its three-year sponsorship agreement of Team MTN Qhubeka, Samsung is passionate about this initiative which aims to provide a bicycle to each member of the community participating in the programme who grows 100 trees.
“The Qhubeka programme is such a great way for a leading brand like Samsung to show how it is working with partners to develop a better Africa for all. Our partnership ensures that a percentage of Samsung GALAXY smartphone and tablet sales is used to contribute to the programme – reflecting how inter-linked the mobile lifestyle is to empowering members of rural communities throughout South Africa,” says Craige Fleischer, Director of Mobile Communications at Samsung South Africa.
Further to this, Team MTN Qhubeka has also been in the spotlight with its amazing performances during the first four months of the European cycling season. The team made history at the weather-struck Milan-San Remo race that saw Gerald Ciolek and his teammates become the first African team to reach victory on a World Tour level.
“The focus of Team MTN Qhubeka towards driving Africa forward and profiling the continent as one that is able to compete with the best in the world is certainly aligned to our business strategy – an African team backed by African partners and fans,” says Fleischer.
Currently, recently the team competed in France at the Tour du Nord-Pas-De-Calais, after which they will remain in the country for the Tour de Picardie taking place from 10 – 12 May 2013.
“As an organisation, Samsung is known for its innovation and bringing unique solutions to the market. We are proud to be associated with another world first in the MTN Qhubeka professional cycling team and are eagerly keeping our eyes on their performance on the world stage,” concludes Fleischer.
The first part of a cycling documentary focusing on the European performances of MTN Qhubeka is available online and provides some insight into what it takes to compete on the world stage.
