This year, through three Big Day Out events, 300 children from 21 schools have had the chance to enjoy a a fun day of activities. The three events each comprised a fun run, some learning activities and a backpack with a water bottle, Rhino story book; an ‘Encounters with Wildlife’ activity book; a badge and an arm band. While the children enjoyed their day out, their teachers also had a chance to learn through financial planning and management workshops.
Qhubeka Buffalo Bicycles were also distributed to children who had earned them in various ways. Those who achieved excellently academically, those seen as “green leaders” who championed environmental causes at their schools, and those who finished in the top three at the fun race were awarded brand new red bicycles sponsored by Coca-Cola, as well as those identified as the most diligent learners, as having demonstrated “ubuntu” qualities, or as veggie heroes for being actively involved in their school’s garden projects. In total, over the three events, 60 red Coca-Cola branded bicycles were distributed.
